John D. Roarty, MD

John Roarty, MD, MPH is a board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist seeing patients at Children’s Eye Care’s Clinton Township and Detroit offices. He is primarily affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Michigan. He’s also on staff at Ascension St John’s Hospital, Beaumont Hospital and Hurley Medical Center to service the neonatal intensive care unit by screening premature babies’ eyes for retinopathy of prematurity

Dr. Roarty was Chief of Ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Michigan from 2004-2020. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Kresge Eye Institute. He is committed to excellence in clinical care in pediatric ophthalmology and in educating future physicians in these areas of medicine. He has received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the residents at Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Roarty has been recognized and named in Best Doctors in the Midwest and Top Docs in Hour Detroit and the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He has also served as President of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and as examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, International Society of Ophthalmic Genetics, Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, Wayne Count Medical Society and the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Roarty has published many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on pediatric ophthalmology and participates in clinical research projects, including national multi-center trials. His clinical and research interests encompass pediatric eye cancer, pediatric glaucoma, pediatric cataracts and pediatric strabismus. He participates in National Institute of Health, National Eye Institute sponsored clinical trials.

He enjoys playing squash and spending time with his wife and four adult children. He’s recently began studying to become a Master Gardener through Michigan State University.
